Det sneaks her out of the car once he’s checked that Father’s asleep, holding her hand behind his back as he leads her through the dark house. She wants to take a shower. He never runs the pipes that late but lets her.

When Det opens Mother’s door, he finds her room is hot and still. He knows what he wants now. “You would have liked her,” he tells the room, “I know it.” He runs his hands across her dresser. Rubs the carved wooden ducks she’d whittled, that get smoother every year.

Turning to his ancestor’s statue on a bracket on the wall, Det raises his hands and bows. Then he fishes the bracelet out of the drawer. He won’t tell Lek, not yet. Maybe later, if he’s sure she’ll still want him, knowing the truth.

“I’m going to take this,” he tells the room. “For when I do ask her.”

Moving against the grain of filial obedience, against the old sense of being known, Det says, “I have to go.” He pauses. “Why didn’t you tell me? You should have told me yourself, so you could tell me I still belong, that I have part of you.” His eyes tear. “But it’ll be okay. I’ll make it so I don’t need my title. Maybe the commonness of my name will help me in the world to come.” Det shuts the door behind him.
